What is Occam’s Razor and How Can It Help Your Business?
State a problem in basic terms and seek the most straightforward solution.
Today’s post is based on a principle known as Occam’s Razor. This principle will expand what has been previously posted here about how to simplify your processes and thus reduce costs and errors in your business. Originating in the 14th Century, Occam’s Razor states the following:
“With any problem or goal, the simplest and most direct explanation or method is usually the best and most effective.”
Stated differently, state a problem in basic terms and seek the most straightforward solution.
This is also true of goals. Define the goal and make the most direct path towards it.
Problem solving is common in business. You might spend a lot of your week focusing on resolving issues. Previously I blogged about Mindstorming and how to solve problems with that process. This can simplify problem solving through clarity on simple and actionable solutions.
With goal setting, a common and simple acronym is GOSPA. Goals, Objectives, Strategies, Plans, and Actions. If you are struggling with complexity, explore these further:
Goals – have you applied the SMART principle?
Objectives – also need to be SMART so they are clear with defined milestones.
Strategies – This is where your objective meets the HOW? Want more leads? How will you reach them? The best strategy will meet three criteria: First it will be easy to define and execute. Second it will be based on skills and resources that you have. And third, it will be practical.
Plan – This is tactical. If you know HOW you will reach your leads, plan through the list of activities that are required to actually get there.
Action – Start. Now. Today. Move your plan forward.
