Why I Halted My Doctorate and Embraced Positive Intelligence

People wonder why I stopped doing my doctorate last fall.

Did I fail? Quit? Lose interest? None of the above.

I stopped because it didn't make sense.

The decision was hard, sure, I certainly don't make it a habit of not finishing what I start.

So, why did I stop? Positive Intelligence (PQ), that's why.

What is Positive Intelligence?

The Positive Intelligence concept and program, developed by Shirzad Chamine, focuses on understanding and improving one's mental fitness, including managing the tendencies and saboteurs that may hinder personal and professional growth.

My PQ

When I did the PQ program and identified my “saboteurs” I learned I was RESTLESS and a HYPER-ACHIEVER.

In Positive Intelligence, "restless” and hyper-achiever" refers to a personality type characterized by the following:

  1. Relentless drive for success and achievement. Yep – that’s me!

  2. Individuals are often highly ambitious, constantly seeking new challenges, and pushing themselves to excel in various aspects of their lives – though they may experience inner restlessness and a sense of never being satisfied with their accomplishments. Me again!

It made sense. I was always looking for the next thing, always trying to scale the next mountain, rarely appreciating the view.

But when you have that AHA moment of "oh, I am doing a 5 year, multi-thousand-dollar program because I am "restless," that didn't make sense for me. This thought started the unpacking of "why are you restless, and are there other ways to handle that?"

Positive Intelligence Works

Here are some comments from those who have gone through the program:

"I just completed the positive intelligence course and found it so transformational! Developing life skills in identifying and recognizing one’s negative reactions and thoughts and turning this into positive reactions while faced with challenges are life skills that every professional, parent or partner can benefit from."

"I found the program to be enlightening and helpful. For it helped me more easily identify strategies to quiet negative self talk and better understand its origins."

"At the end of the program I feel much more confident in managing and preparing for both work and personal stressors that come with being not just an executive but also a sensitive person."

"Over the past few years my mind and way of thinking had quietly gone into survival mode. All my energy was focused on identifying and reacting to obstacles and problems. Judgement and mistrust was becoming the norm for me. The PQ program is bringing me back to a point where I see the opportunities available, make better use of the resources and recognize the strengths of the people that surround me everyday. Enjoying your day is so much better than surviving your day."

"I have found that the PQ training has helped me to connect better with my clients and employees at a deeper and more productive level than before. After only 6 weeks, I have experienced better results at getting to an agreement or a mutual level of understanding when employing the PQ methods."

Coaching and PQ can help you to work through your restlessness, or any other saboteur you may have camping in your brain. Reach out if you want to know more.
