Coaching IS: A Catalyst, NOT A Crutch

Scrabble tiles on a wooden table with random letters scattered around the word coach
Entrepreneurs, leaders, and business owners don’t need another crutch. They need catalysts; people who spark change, push them to grow, and help them achieve more than they thought possible.

When people first consider coaching, they sometimes worry: “If I hire a coach, will I become dependent on them?” Or, “Will I lose confidence to make my own decisions?”

These concerns are valid, but they misunderstand what coaching really is.

Coaching is a catalyst, not a crutch.

A crutch is something you lean on because you can’t walk (safely) without it. A catalyst is something that accelerates change, sparks growth, and helps you move further, faster, but doesn’t replace your own effort. Coaching is about unlocking your potential, not creating dependency.

Why People Fear “Crutches”

In leadership, entrepreneurship, and business ownership, independence is highly valued. You’re used to solving problems, making decisions, and carrying responsibility. The thought of relying too heavily on someone else can feel uncomfortable.

And when it comes to staff or people on your team, a person-crutch is a pending problem. If one person has all the keys to your business castle, that’s a risk. If one person leaving collapses your sales scaffolding? Also bad. So no, a good coach will not create a crutch-dynamic.

This is why some hesitate about coaching: “I don’t want to become reliant.” But that fear overlooks the nature of the coaching process.

Coaching as a Catalyst

So, what does it mean for coaching to be a catalyst?

Ignites Momentum

  • Coaching sparks new energy and ideas.

  • It helps you break through inertia and start moving forward.

  • It’s creating actionable plans with accountability to complete them.

Accelerates Growth

  • Like a catalyst in chemistry, coaching speeds up results you might not achieve alone.

  • Small insights can lead to big breakthroughs.

Creates Transformation

  • Coaching doesn’t just solve one issue. It shifts how you think, decide, and act long-term.

  • It’s EUREKA moments, each session.

Strengthens Self-Sufficiency

  • The ultimate goal of coaching is for you to grow stronger, more confident, and more capable on your own.

  • It’s change in you, not creating change for you to lean on.

Why Coaching is Not a Crutch

Here’s what coaching does not do:

  • It doesn’t give you every answer.

  • It doesn’t do the work for you.

  • It doesn’t keep you dependent on sessions to function or move your business forward.

Instead, coaching empowers you to:

  • Make decisions with confidence.

  • Build systems and habits that last.

  • Move forward independently with greater clarity.

Examples of Coaching as a Catalyst

  • Entrepreneur: After months of stagnation, coaching helps the entrepreneur identify the blockage. The result is a growth strategy with the barriers removed. Within weeks, they’re energized, focused, and moving forward faster than ever.

  • Business owner: Instead of relying on a coach to manage staff challenges, the owner develops leadership skills and understands leadership challenges that permanently improve team culture. Team culture leads to loyalty and engagement.

  • Corporate leader: Coaching sparks new awareness about communication, helping the leader create stronger relationships across the organization. The changes ripple far beyond the coaching sessions.

A Metaphor: Jump-Starting a Car

Imagine your car battery is drained.

  • A crutch would be like someone towing your car everywhere because it can’t run on its own.

  • A catalyst is jumper cables. The spark gets your car going, but once it’s started, you drive it yourself.

Coaching is the jumper cable. It helps you restart momentum, charge your battery, give you life again, but you’re the one behind the wheel.

Why Catalysts Matter in Business

In science, catalysts lower the energy required for a reaction. In business, coaching lowers the energy and removes the spiraling that prevents, avoids, or stalls:

  • Tough decisions.

  • Breakthrough plateaus.

  • Clarity and action.

Without coaching, change still happens, but often slowly, painfully, or not at all. With coaching, change accelerates.

Common Misconceptions

  • “If I start coaching, I’ll need it forever.”
Not true. Coaching strengthens your independence, not your dependence. We all outgrow our coaches in life: parents, sports coaches, therapists. Nothing is permanent.

  • “Coaching will do the work for me.”
Coaching guides, challenges, and supports, but the effort and results are yours. Coaching might be the catalyst, but you are the spark.

  • “I should be able to do this alone.”
Even the best athletes and leaders use coaches. Heck, you needed parents, too. Coaching is about maximizing performance, not admitting weakness. It’s raising you to be your strong, independent-business-owner-leader self.

Why This Matters for Entrepreneurs and Leaders

If you see coaching as a crutch, you’ll resist it and miss out on its benefits. But when you see it as a catalyst, you understand it’s about:

  • Gaining momentum.

  • Accelerating growth.

  • Transforming your mindset and results.

Entrepreneurs, leaders, and business owners don’t need another crutch. They need catalysts; people who spark change, push them to grow, and help them achieve more than they thought possible.

Final Thoughts: Coaching Sparks, You Sustain

Coaching isn’t something you lean on forever. It’s something that ignites something inside of you that is buried under schedules, meetings, demands, responsibilities, roles, daily distractions, pings, notifications, reminders, and STUFF! Once you are ignited, look out: growth, accelerated progress, and self-empowerment keep going long after the session ends.

Coaching is catalyst, not crutch. It doesn’t carry you, it helps you go farther, faster, with more confidence and clarity than you thought possible.
