50 Years, 50 Lessons

Lesson 16: See Clearly. Wear the Damn Glasses.

Dear Julie,

Wear the damn glasses.

Love Julie

This one is for me, but maybe it resonates with you, too.

Several years ago, I was told I needed glasses for reading. You know: “You are that age.”

Denial. Avoidance. No benefits. My response: “No, thank you.”

A few years later, the message is said again. “You need glasses for reading.” Like I didn’t already know that – things were blurry, but with the right light and the right time of day and the right book font, I was “fine.”

Then my benefits were ending, and my $200 for glasses would be lost. So, I got them. Two pairs. Glasses for reading and glasses for working on a computer.

Fast forward another few years, and I still barely wear them. The odd book with the odd small font, maybe. But I continue to ignore the reality that these are helpful.

I recently went for a private health assessment. The results indicated my vision was bad. Of course, I did the test without my glasses.

Why am I not wearing my glasses?

  1. Behavior. They are just not part of my routine. I can live without them, so I do.

  2. Fear. Wearing them will make my eyes lazy. My vision will get worse if it doesn’t have to work so hard.

  3. Inconvenience. Something else to remember with my phone, charger, water, tea, computer, purse, snack, and car keys…there is already enough to forget.

  4. Expense. I am very likely to lose my glasses. So, they stay in the same spot, so I know where they are.

Of course, if I needed them to drive or to work, that would be different. But I don’t.

However, using them makes sense. It’s time.

Your turn:

What is something that you know you SHOULD do, but aren’t, or is something you are avoiding, and it’s time to stop?

To All: Thank you for being on this journey with me – past, present, and future.

Julie
