Unveiling 'The Responsibility Ethic': The Fantastic Four Goals

I am enjoying the chapter on Taking Responsibility for your Goals and wanted to share a few key messages here.

The chapter discusses the research of Tim Kasser and Richard M. Ryan where they have spent their careers studying the link between materialism and well-being.

The Toxic Three

Kasser and Ryan cite the three most TOXIC personal goals:

  1. Money

  2. Status

  3. Physical Beauty

Wow, social media is not helping us here!

Instead of the TOXIC THREE, Kasser and Ryan promote the FANTASTIC FOUR. These are goal areas that link to actual well-being.

The Fantastic Four

The first one resonates with work (or volunteering):

1. Community Value: "the highest form of community service is good business. How can you use your vocation to make a difference in the world? What can you do that will effectively serve more people? Where can you serve the community that will give you positive return on energy?" (page 41).

The other three resonate with work and life:

2. Health and Wellness: how can small changes lean you into wellness?

3. Authentic Relationships: are you bringing you best self to the five most important relationships in your life?

4. Self-Awareness: how can you be more, well, YOU?

Not surprisingly, I see everyday how all of these FANTASTIC FOUR are intertwined.

Business coaching can address them all. Keep that in mind if you see gaps between your goals and your outcomes.
